When Ryan Tattle was playing junior hockey with the Coquitlam Express in the BCHL, cancer hit close to home. His mom had been battling cancer for over a year, and close friend and former teammate Greg Lapointe had just been diagnosed.
Ryan knew he couldn't cure cancer himself, but he could use his game to make a real difference.
In July 2021, he created Score For Cancer — a pledge-based initiative where supporters donated for every point he scored. With the incredibly support of his community, each point Ryan would tally was equal to a little over $1,000 for cancer research.
During that season, on February 26th 2022 the Coquitlam Express hosted a Score For Cancer Game. A charity hockey event with custom jerseys, silent auctions, and a community rallying around one cause.
That night was magical. With a packed rink including friends, family, and his late Mom, Ryan scored 4 goals and 1 assist leading the Express to a victory. That first Score For Cancer game raised an additional $20,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. At the end of the 2021/2022 season, Score For Cancer had totalled over $100,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society; but that was just the beginning.
Since then, the Score For Cancer game has become an annual event hosted by the Coquitlam Express.
The Coquitlam Express have continued to work with Score For Cancer by hosting an annual Score For Cancer game, where this past year on December 20th, 2025, over $19,000 was raised.
Now 5 years later and Score For Cancer has raised over $186,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society and grown far beyond the rink — with new events, new cities, and a mission that keeps getting bigger.
